“I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours“
Perhaps it’s because I’m not good with words or speech, that I looked for something different than language. The Little Prince claims: “One can only rightfully see from the heart….what is essential is investable to the eye.”
So, buying into the Little Prince, when something is essential, most essential, like when when you first connect with one who just became Alone Again, silence does it for me. Silent eyes — eyes that have been there — those silent eyes say what words cannot.
There’s a local restaurant that Ricki and I visited not less twice a week, where we were often served by the same gal. The thought of going back to “our restaurant” was more than my emotions could deal with. Yet, a bit more than two years of my becoming a widower, I was taken there without a choice. I noticed “our waitress” hustling about the next room. I notice her entering the kitchen and returning with a full tray. She then saw me, stopped, set the tray on an empty table, and came over to our table. Stopped in front of me, now standing, said nothing, stepped closer and hugged me, stopped, turned and returned to the empty table. Silent eyes said it all. For a moment, I was not Alone.
